A gem on the East Coast

Nestled on the northern shore of the North Island’s Hawke’s Bay is the picturesque town of Wairoa.

Commonly referred to as a manufacturing and farming service town, it covers a land area of just under 4,200sq km and boasts a population of just under 8,000 (2013 census).

The main State Highway (SH2) that connects Napier and Gisborne, runs straight through Wairoa’s centre. This makes the town easily accessible, with only a 120km drive from Napier or 90km drive from Gisborne.

The district has a thriving rural community and provides the perfect conditions for an array of farming practices. These operate all year round and include sheep and beef, dairying, cropping, horticulture and forestry.

Wairoa district is often described as a tourism ‘mecca’ with an abundance of natural attractions. Many of these are also rich in Maori culture, with locals always happy to share the history and stories of their people.

The town itself is located along the banks for the Wairoa River, with the river mouth flowing into the South Pacific Ocean. The river is revered throughout the country for its fishing and white-baiting and every year plays host to a national water-skiing and speed boat event.

Just 67km inland from Wairoa is Lake Waikaremoana, a favourite for walkers, campers and boaties all year round. At the north-eastern tip of the district is Mahia Peninsula - a summer holiday favourite for beach-lovers.

Wairoa’s diverse community is overflowing with people who work tirelessly (and often voluntarily) to ensure the district’s event calendar is full and its natural beauty is protected. It is this endearing small-community spirit that continues to attract professionals and families who are looking to escape the rat-race and live out their “kiwi dream”.
